Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge has always been a dream of mine, a resort that we would visit and come away saying “wouldn’t it be amazing to stay there?”. Well, guess what? We just* returned from the most amazing holiday where my dreams came true! And it was everything and more that I hoped it would be.
*It was actually about 2 months ago now, thats how long its taken me to write this!
SO, here’s my advice on how to make the most of everything this incredible resort has to offer!
Its safe to say that Animal Kingdom Lodge is unbelievably beautiful, from the grand African lobby with the huge glass windows overlooking the savannah, to the picturesque pools, lots of beautifully on-theme bars and restaurants, and of course the amazing outlooks and viewpoints for wildlife-watching! I could spend all day walking around (and smelling, oh my goodness the GORGEOUS smell) and looking at all the African themed artefacts and decorations dotted around, Disney really knows how to do themed resorts!
We stayed in a Pool View studio room with 2 queen beds, it was such a good size and had tons of storage space, which is something you don’t always get at a Disney Resort. The bathroom was also amazing, with two sinks and a huge vanity area.
As with all Disney resorts, there is regular complimentary transportation to the parks which we found really convenient and frequent. Don’t forget if you now click your resort reservation on the MDE app, you will be able to access live bus times for your resort, such a handy addition to the app.
Of course, one of the most amazing parts of this resort is the Savannah full of wild animals including Giraffes, Antelope, Flamingos, Zebra and many more. You will have a wildlife viewing guide in your room for reference, this makes such a fun activity for the kids and grown-ups alike. If you don’t have a Savannah view room (which you don’t need if you want to save some pennies), there are so many overlooks to sit and watch the animals.
AKL has so much to offer when it comes to food and drink, from signature options in the form of Jiko, table service restaurants Boma and Sanaa, or The Mara if you just need to grab and go. Whatever you do, get the famous Zebra Domes – OH MY!! And don’t forget a traditional Tusker beer with your meal to really get you into the African spirit!
Recreation & Activities
There is so much on offer at the resort that I would be here all day if I went into it all!! As you check-in you will be given a calendar with all of the activities available throughout your stay, make sure you check it out to ensure you make the most of everything the resort has to offer.
Our girls had traditional African face painting (available for the grown ups too!), played Pixar bingo by the pool, played in the arcade, had a mini dance party in the lobby, ran around for hours on the playground, and so much more (including having to tear them away daily from the mini rocking chairs and classic Mickey cartoons in the lobby!). One of our favourite offerings at the Disney resorts is the Campfire, available every evening with complimentary marshmallow toasting (we were even given S’mores kits which I’d heard were chargeable..). Sitting eating toasted marshmallows watching the animals, as the sun set over the savannah was one of my favourite moments of our stay. Don’t forget Movies Under The Stars too, a nightly screening of some of your favourite Disney movies, on a giant screen, in the great Floridian outdoors, perfect!
If paying cash for your stay at AKL you will be staying in Jambo House, but you must make sure you hop down to the DVC area of the resort, Kidani Village. As well as a further beautiful lobby to explore and some of the other food offerings, they have an amazing pool and splash zone – Samawati Springs, which the kids adored. There is an internal shuttle but honestly it was about an 8 minute walk between the two parts of the resort which is so much easier!
So there we have it, a short and sweet guide to the wonderful Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. We really, really love this resort and feel totally immersed into the African culture. Much love, Sian x
